23 September 2015 - GlobalPlatform, the organization which standardizes the management of applications on secure chip technology, has published a free to download white paper, which highlights the value proposition for the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) to support the secure distribution of premium content across any channel and in any format.
The TEE is a secure area of the main processor in a smartphone, smartTV, set-top-box (or any connected device) which ensures that sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in an isolated, trusted environment, without any loss of performance. Premium content providers are showing significant interest in GlobalPlatform's standardized TEE technology, as it enables simple and unified content protection implementations, which can accelerate time to market, reduce security risks and increase return on investment. It also provides a path to TEE certification, which is critical to ensure that a specified level of security can be validated across all compliant TEE platforms.
The white paper, entitled: 'Improving Premium Content Protection with the Trusted Execution Environment' describes the distribution challenges premium content providers are now facing as technological advances bring opportunities, not just for providers and consumers but also for a growth in piracy. It introduces the TEE and its general security characteristics, before outlining the importance of a robust certification process to qualify the TEE against a range of threats and attacks.
The paper presents GlobalPlatform's progress to date in defining a standardized TEE architecture, and explains why standards are necessary to bring unity and efficiency to the premium content ecosystem.
"The distribution of premium content to televisions, set-top-boxes, tablets and mobile devices is growing at a faster rate than ever before," explains Kevin Gillick, Executive Director of GlobalPlatform. "With content formats proliferating, losses from piracy increasing, and Ultra High Definition (UHD) content being put into distribution, the stakes have never been higher. It's becoming increasingly important for premium content providers to simplify and enhance content protection in order that they can adequately protect their assets.
"GlobalPlatform's TEE model combines the flexibility of software-based solutions, the robustness of hardware-based solutions and the convenience of a single certification body ensuring that it more than meets the needs of premium content providers. TEE is already trusted by financial institutions, mobile network operators and other organizations that view security as essential to the protection of their service offering."
GlobalPlatform is leading global TEE standardization efforts to ensure the development of a globally interoperable ecosystem. To support this, the organization is launching a TEE Security Evaluation Secretariat to manage its TEE Certification Scheme. This initiative will accelerate the deployment of certified TEEs and create an ecosystem where GlobalPlatform certification of TEE products become a prerequisite amongst service and platform providers.
The new GlobalPlatform white paper, which can be downloaded from the GlobalPlatform website, will be of interest to stakeholders across the premium content market including executives in media organizations, especially content owners, rights holders and premium content providers. It is also intended for manufacturers of media consumption devices, such as televisions, set-top boxes, tablets and mobile devices.
